Terrorism expert warns of calm before the storm

Britain is enjoying the calm before the storm in the fight against global terrorism, claims a leading counter-terrorism expert.

Amnon Maor, the head instructor of counter-terrorism warfare for the Israeli Defence Force and the Israeli police, made the comments while in Scotland to train would-be instructors from a variety of police, military and civilian backgrounds in the latest security techniques.

As police and government officials have warned of the very real dangers of
another big terrorist attack on a soft target somewhere in Britain sooner rather than later an increasing number of major companies and private organisations are preparing for the worst.

"Britain in five years could be like Israel now. Always people have to be on their guard against suicide bombers or other terrorist attacks on public places," warned Mr Maor, who has spent the last 25 years teaching the Israeli forces on defence techniques ranging from dealing with a bat-wielding attacker to a suicide bomber.

"The police and army can't be everywhere. People have to be aware of what's happening around them and deal with situations before they happen.

"It takes just one crazy with a bomb, or any kind of weapon, to ruin a lot of people's lives. We can't stop everyone but we can reduce the risk with a little training and awareness".

Amnon Maor spent the last week (until Sunday May 13) teaching instructors with a variety of civilian, military and law-enforcement backgrounds the latest defence techniques as devised by the Israeli forces in the wake of the war in Lebanon and on-going security threat in the middle-east.

As one of Israel's leading anti-terrorism experts he specialises in Krav Maga Maor, an advanced form of the Israeli self-defence practiced by police forces around the world.

The recent revelation that Britain's security services uncovered a plot to bomb the Blue Water Shopping complex in Essex and the Ministry of Sound nightclub in London has highlighted the ever present dangers.

"Awareness, anticipation and avoidance are the best defences," said Simon Leila, Director of 360 Defence, a private security consultancy and organisers of the course near Glasgow which finished yesterday (Sun).

"But if that fails there has to be an appropriate response. Krav Maga Maor has been devised to deal with any situation from pacifying an aggressive individual to restraining a criminal or taking out a suicide bomber.

Different levels can be taught to civilians, law enforcement agencies and military personnel to meet their specific needs.

"This course was arranged because of the increased number of corporate and public organisations who are starting to take the security of their staff and customers seriously. These methods have been tried and tested in one of the most hostile areas of the world so we know they work."
